Explorador británico. Fue miembro de la expedición de Richard Burton; ambos fueron los primeros europeos en llegar al lago Tanganyika (1858). En el viaje de regreso abandonó a Burton y avanzó solo hacia el norte. En julio de 1858 llegó a un gran lago que denominó lago Victoria, en honor de la reina. Su afirmación de que era la fuente del Nilo fue cuestionada, pero en una segunda expedición (1860–63) encontró la salida del Nilo desde el lago, hallazgo que fue una vez más puesto en duda en Inglaterra. Murió de un disparo de su propia arma mientras cazaba, el mismo día en que iba a debatir públicamente con Burton.
